Sugar spit biting

Sugar spit biting is the name of the technique I used for these prints.

I started by choosing an image from my sketchbook. This one shows a few ornaments on a shelf.

I traced the main outlines onto a metal plate. I painted with a solution of sugar on the plate before placing it in acid.

Afterwards I covered the plate in ink and wiped most of it. The ink remained in the areas made rough by the acid.

I made a first print that shows only the dark outlines I painted.

Later I applied  a second coat of acid with a brush, giving longer times to create some darker areas. I also painted with a permanent marker to protect from the acid the shiny areas of the ornaments.

I made a few more prints but I think these give enough idea of the results you can get.

Thanks for reading this.
